Bit of discussion about the 26/27 squad in the other thread so thought I'd move it to it's own one. I am sure we will see a retained list in the next week or so but for now, the confirmed contracted players for next season are:

Brennan Camp

Josh Taylor (injured for the first few months)

Harry Pinchard

James McShane

Seb Tauta-Caballero

Dennon Lewis

Alfie Rutherford

Jake Lawrence

Confirmed players leaving so far:

Tony Craig (retired)

Luke Moore (retired)

Niall McManus

Who would everyone keep/release for next season?

Yeah, a decent pre-season schedule in terms of trips.

Interesting that there isn't really a "tough" game in there though as no NL or League Two/One teams as I assume the Charlton side will be U23s.

Yes I was hoping for a NL team and I expect Charlton will be U23s. Good the club seem to be building relationship with them. Also was hoping for home game against someone not seen but seen both. May go depending on whom Crawley playing.

Will be interesting if Enslin and Casey turn out for Charlton in that game...

Just seen that Callum Dolan of Torquay has announced he’s leaving. Would be a great acquisition for someone

A very interesting article on Summer business:

https://www.getsurrey.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/its-5050-whether-charlie-carter-33940505

TL;DR

  • 50/50 if Carter stays due to some big offers from NL/L2
  • Record amount of Summer signings (6 so far)
  • Some signings can't be announced yet as not out of contract yet at current clubs, and compensation due for one
  • Gallagher and Pybus signed new deals
  • Vincent, Annesley, Muitt, McShane all under contract with Prior expected to stay as well
  • No mention of Foulkes, Norville-Williams, Francomb or Knight
  • Unlikely to be signing Ashley Nadesan from Sutton (no idea why this was included...)
  • Consulting with Charlton Athletic on how to improve injury situation

Probably because Ashley Nadesan had been suggested as a possible signing?

It's a shame because he'd be a good replacement for Jason Prior - fully capable of doing the defensive side of JP's game. He was often played as a centre-back for Horley Town.

@smr I guess so but I hadn't seen any rumours about Nadesan until now. Plus Marc said Prior is expected to stay in that article so no replacement needed at this stage.

Just read this on Twitter, really revealing. Was surprised on a new deal for Pybus and Prior staying. Rich on BOA reckons JNW and Charlie will probably leave.

Surprised at Pybus but Marc knows what he is doing.

Cant begrudge Charlie if he does move on, Sutton would seem like a bit of a sideways move though, been on some what of a decline the last few years now, relegation from League 2, midtable finish in the NL 24/25 and 19th this season

Obviously will be gutted if Charlie leaves. He is so good for this level, our captain and leader, and probably one of only a few “blue chip” players we have at the club. I think back to the Slough game with the last minute winner, and the Hampton game last year where he scored a hat trick in six minutes.

He will be a big miss. Yet, and I know correlation ≠ causation, we won six in a row after he got injured at Tonbridge, and when he returned it was not like, to my naked eye anyway, we suddenly looked a far better team. That would be the positive that we can still be competitive next year without him.

Also agree with posters that, with the “we need to get players on the pitch” focus seemingly being the lesson of the season, I did think the casualties of that would be Pybus and JP9, who have not been able to sustain long periods in the team without injury. Obviously delighted for them on a personal level to still remain with the club if so, but if they miss games next year, Marc will have to take that one on the chin IMHO and we cannot chalk it down to bad luck.

My weekly reminder that only 3 players made more appearances than Prior last season (Lewis, Vincent, Foulkes) and only 1 player has made more appearances than him across the last couple of seasons (Foulkes).

I can understand there are reasons for wanting to move Prior on, but his general fitness/availability is not one of them.

The Carter record is a funny one as our win percentage without him is much higher than with him. However, that data is probably skewed a little bit due to the fact that his first 25+ games for the club were during our relegation season where we were losing most games.

We probably do look a slightly more balanced side without him, but there isn't really any other player in the side who can win matches by himself and come up with big moments like Carter.

JP was also 4th highest scorer, and 5th highest assists. Also good in the air so useful when defending corners. Maybe the assumption he is often injured may be the fact he often does not play the full 90 (but then again neither does Alfie). Certainly worth another year at this level if he keeps fit.

@calvertskans

Take your point and there definitely is some recency bias from me, probably as he got injured twice in the final few months of the season including the final game and missed a chunk of games in March - but obviously not as much as I thought!

Diving in the Charlie stats a bit more today, last season (according to Transfermrkt) we averaged 1.72 points per game, and when Charlie played it was 1.38.. the worst of anyone who played over 15 appearances for us! Again don’t know if there is much behind it but it’s really unusual.

On the other end of the spectrum we averaged 2.37 PPG with Dan G and 2.44 with Casey in the team.  Knew about Casey being vital but probably underestimated how much of a loss Dan G was.. we basically won every game he played!

@mattywanderer He played the full 90 mins in 17 out of 29 starts which isn't bad for a striker!

Yeah, the Carter data is odd but probably partly due to the position he plays in the side. He is a far more attacking option in that role than Vincent, Pinchard, Taylor, etc and as a result, we probably ship more goals with him in the side. We've often tried to shoehorn him in up top as one of the two strikers, but he isn't really an off-the-shoulder threat like Rutherford and can't really do the role of a Prior or PMac either.

However, 30+ goals from midfield in two and a half seasons is very good and we wll desperately need to replace those goals from somewhere if he does leave...

I do think that Foulkes and probably even Norville-Williams are more important retains than Carter. That being said, one of the signings appears to be a direct replacement for JNW so unlikely he stays either  😕

And yes, Gallagher was a massive loss as our win % with him has always been ridiculous. We also massively missed him in those last few games when TC and Annesley got injured. He's signed on for two more years now though!
