Attention turns back to the league as we face fellow promotion rivals Ebbsfleet United this weekend. The Fleet, who sit 2 points behind us in 14th, are winless in their last 5 league matches but did beat National League side Solihull Moors to reach the first round of the FA Cup last Saturday.
Marc announced in his update that Charlie Carter has an unknown return date from his knee injury but Pybus, Gallagher and McManus are all not far from a return.
Predictions:
Ebbsfleet 2-2 Dorking (Rutherford, Muitt)
1,522 att. (195 away)
Foulkes
Camp Annesley Storey Norville-Williams
Taylor Moore
Muitt McShane Lewis
Rutherford
Subs: Craig, Francomb, Vincent, Sullivan, Hebert, Prior, Straker
Think you are all being pretty harsh on your team. Yes, you missed chances, but so did we. That was a good game of football between 2 decent teams that could have finished 4-4 if both took their chances. We probably just about edged it, but if your effort that hit the bar had gone in to make it 2-0 you would probably have gone home with the points.
White doesn't help himself though with his blinkered views. He must have repeated the same comments about how unlucky you were for starters at least 3 or 4 times in his post match interview. But you weren't the only ones to make an enforced change - our centre half went off with injury and that contributed to your goal. And to suggest you were "dominant" in the first half was somewhat OTT. Yes, you may have had a decent amount of the ball, but don't recall our keeper having many saves to make in that time.
Still think we will both be in or around play offs come the end of season
And at least your womens team beat our womens team 😂
I thought we were poor yesterday. A clash between two classic mid-table teams, both lacking consistency on the ball. I actually thought Moore and Prior played well despite being ancient. McShane, with the exception of one brilliant piece of skill and pass that nearly brought a goal, was dreadful. He gave the ball away for their second goal, and didn't put a shift in. He was too reactive, and looked like he was having a nice kick about with his mates rather than try his hardest.
@awyatt62 I agree with you (welcome to our forum btw!) - and I think a sense of perspective is needed here.
At the end of the day, we could easily have beaten, and certainly drawn away from home against a strong side who will be in the play offs come the end of the season, no doubt.
Yet again, it was finishing that cost us - and yes, a new striker is needed but I'm guessing that is already high on everyone's agenda, but that's not the easiest thing to do and get right, and I'm sure there are some budget restrictions too.
So, it's not all doom and gloom, we are a striker (and/or a return to better finishing) away from being a top 3 side, imo.
@awyatt62 Some very good points well made and congrats on the win. Completely agree as well that Marc's post match was blinkered.
The game was much of the same and has got to the point where I could probably create a template response now and just copy and paste it each week. Lots of 'control' but little quality up top and some poor goals to concede. To suggest we were "outstanding" and "dominant" and "deserved the 3 points" was disrepectful to Ebbsfleet who had the better of the chances and a ton of corners/free kicks. In fact, no side has created a higher xG against us this season by some distance. A point was probably the fair result but we consistently find ways to drop points at the moment.
The turning point in the game was Prior coming off but only because we decided to replace him with Sullivan who we then put up top for some strange reason. If you look at his average position, he was actually higer up the pitch than the likes of Rutherford and McShane. I think bringing on one of the more senior players such as Annesley and tweaking the system slightly would have been much better in that scenario.
We've not won in the league since 6th September meaning Dover tomorrow is really crucial as we can't afford to lose more ground in the promotion race. We currently sit below all 3 promoted sides in the table (albeit with games in hand) and the likes of Worthing, Eastbourne, Maidstone and Ebbsfleet are starting to get their acts together as well.
Some stats:
Possession: Ebbsfleet 40% - 60% Dorking
Shots (OT): Ebbsfleet 15 (7) - 18 (7) Dorking
xG: Ebbsfleet 2.66 - 1.90 Dorking
Top Performer: Dennon Lewis [8.6]
Seen todays video update from Marc White. I thought he said he doesn't read forums and social media (!)... I am not sure where else he has come across these supposed fans with an "entitled attitude" if he isn't referring to online comments?
It is surely entirely natural for fans to discuss the games online and at the moment it isn't going to be glowing remarks when the results are extremely patchy at best! Marc himself has done many post match interviews down the years which have been expletive filled and full of damning criticism of the players, all fans, and he is the number one fan, have times where they don't think things are going brilliantly.
The fans are led to believe that the club has massively improved the physio department since the last two injury ravaged seasons, yet by his own admission we only started on Saturday with 3 fit substitutes (yet we brought 4 on??) , and we go into the Dover away game with "eight or nine" (in his words) out injured.
I do get that as the prominent figurehead of this business it is his job to talk up our chances, to show a positive front and to get as many people along, filling the ground for games in order to back the players and boost the budget, but the interviews and analysis are often exaggerations of our performances. For all our possession, after Prior went off for the last half hour we couldn't hit the proverbial cows backside with a banjo and with the subs we had it was always going to be an uphill task.
By all means be positive about upcoming games, the supporters are going to be positive, that is never in question, but it really isn't needed to tell fans what they can and can't think and say about how the team is doing. Fans are not stupid they can see the deficiencies themselves. A balanced outlook is just as respected as trying to revise the actual performance. When sloppy goals are conceded it's not a "whole load of bad luck", there is clearly some defensive work required! Fans aren't booing anyone in the ground, but can discuss over a pint or on a forum what's not working.
I hope that Marc does "continue to build the team" as a couple of loans would be a fantastic start to that until a few of the injured players return. All supporters are behind the team and want them to do well, if we aren't good enough at the moment, we are "entitled" to discuss and debate the shortcomings without being told that criticism isn't allowed or else to basically support another club, which is a big overreaction.
